Even after being thoroughly rinsed under the faucet, the artificial eye is often not 100% clean, and it can feel quite scratchy. Usually, the discomfort goes away quickly if the prosthesis is rinsed with a drop of an alkaline-free liquid, such as baby shampoo. Some people prefer to use contact lens solution for cleaning and are very satisfied with it, while others, on the other hand, are not. There are people who swear by using 2-in-1 contact lens solution and store their ocular prostheses in it overnight. For them, it works very well against irritation. It really comes down to trial and error!
After an eye has been removed, the socket into which a prosthetic eye is to be fitted may turn out to be too small. This is because there is not enough tissue in the socket. This problem occurs in people who have already undergone multiple eye surgeries, following accidents, or due to damage caused by corrosive substances such as lye or acid.
If an ocular prosthesis falls out of the eye socket, it is usually because the crease in the lower eyelid where the ocular prosthesis rests has become too shallow. To correct this, the crease is surgically deepened. Sometimes this can be achieved by suturing the conjunctiva in the eye socket downward. However, if there is insufficient conjunctiva, the mucous membrane in the eye socket must be augmented with a graft. Mucous membrane from the inside of the lip or cheek is usually used for this purpose. In both cases, surgery under general anesthesia is necessary.
When wearing a prosthetic eye, (protein) discharge or gunk may build up in the eye. Many people experience this to a greater or lesser extent. Sometimes it’s caused by air conditioning or being in a dusty room. The discharge can also get worse if it has been a long time since the prosthesis was polished, or if the prosthesis no longer fits properly. The discharge can be easily removed from the eye with a moistened cotton swab. If you don’t have one on hand, use a tissue. You can also briefly rinse the denture under the faucet.
This occurs when the weight of an ocular prosthesis presses on the tissues on the inside of the lower eyelid. As a result, the eyelid may gradually drop or begin to sag. Fortunately, this can usually be effectively treated by tightening the eyelid slightly under local anesthesia.
