How do I care for my ocular prosthesis?

Caring for an ocular prosthesis is simple. Follow these steps for optimal care:

  1. Cleaning with lukewarm water: Rinse your ocular prosthesis with clean, lukewarm water. Avoid extreme temperatures and harsh cleaning products, such as CIF, which can damage the surface or material of the prosthesis.
  2. Hygiene: Wash your hands before removing the dentures. Practice good hygiene to prevent infections.
  3. Prevent drops: Fill the sink with a small amount of water before removing your dentures. Place a washcloth at the bottom to catch them if they fall, especially if you have glass dentures.
  4. Soaking to Remove Stains: If your dentures are heavily soiled, you can soak them for ten minutes in a solution of one teaspoon of salt per liter of water. Then rinse them thoroughly and wipe them down with a soft cotton cloth.
  5. Antiseptic solution: Antiseptic solutions can help with certain symptoms. Ask your ocularist for more information.

How often should I clean my ocular prosthesis?

The frequency of cleaning varies from person to person. Some people clean their prosthesis only once every few weeks or until their next visit to the ocularist, while others prefer daily maintenance. Choose whatever feels best for you.
