What is important to know before eye removal surgery?
- Blood Thinners: If you are taking blood thinners, the doctor will ask if you can temporarily stop taking them. This decision will be made in consultation with your primary care physician, cardiologist, or the person who prescribed the medication.
- Medication: For one week before the procedure and one week afterward, it is recommended that you avoid taking any medications that affect blood clotting, such as aspirin, Ascal, or ibuprofen. If you experience pain, you can take acetaminophen. If you have any questions, you can always consult the hospital or your primary care physician.
- Ask for help: Make sure you don’t have to do all sorts of (household) chores right after surgery. It’s important to recover properly. So, before you go to the hospital, make arrangements for support for when you’re allowed to go home.
- Work: Plan to take at least two weeks off after the surgery. Let your employer know in advance.
- Preparations at home: Make sure you have acetaminophen and gauze pads (10 x 10) on hand for any aftercare.
- Appointment with an ocularist: It is a good idea to schedule an appointment with an ocularist before the surgery to have an ocular prosthesis made.
