I experience pain when putting in and taking out my ocular prosthesis. Why is that?

Inserting or removing a prosthesis should not be painful. If you do experience pain, please contact your ocularist.

I have a lot of gunk in my eye. Is that normal?

There is often a slight discharge from the eye socket. Every prosthesis causes mild irritation of the mucous membrane in the socket. This leads to the formation of mucus that adheres to the prosthesis. Unfortunately, there is generally little that can be done about this. Regular cleaning of the prosthesis, polishing an acrylic prosthesis if it has been more than a year since the last time, and replacing a glass prosthesis that is more than 2 years old are possible solutions. In addition, artificial tears may help. If there is excessive discharge, this may be the result of an infection or allergic inflammation of the conjunctiva. In that case, antibiotic eye drops or anti-inflammatory ointment can be used for treatment.
