What are the steps involved in fitting an ocular prosthesis?

  1. Taking an impression: The ocularist sometimes takes an impression of the eye socket, especially if the eye socket is severely damaged. However, the ocularist usually selects a base model that resembles the shape of the patient’s own eyeball and fills this model with wax.
  2. Choosing a Color and Pattern: Based on the patient’s healthy eye, the ocularist selects a suitable color and pattern for the iris of the prosthetic eye.
  3. Customization: The prosthesis is custom -made. A glass artificial eye is ready the same day. For a plastic eye prosthesis, two visits to the ocularist are usually necessary to get the shape and color just right.
