Retinoblastoma in the Top 3: Best Survival Rate for Childhood Cancers
The survival rate for children (ages 0 to 18) with cancer has continued to rise. Of the children who were diagnosed with cancer between 2010 and 2018, 84 percent were still alive five years later.
Among children who developed cancer between 1990 and 1999, this percentage was 74 percent. This is according to data from the Dutch Cancer Registry, which was released by the Netherlands Comprehensive Cancer Organization (IKNL).
The number of children diagnosed with cancer is around 600 new cases per year. The most common types of cancer during the 2020–2024 period were acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), low-grade glioma, and Hodgkin lymphoma. The latter two, along with retinoblastoma, are also the three types of cancer with the highest survival rates: 96 to 98 percent of children with one of these diseases are still alive after five years.
