Highest Number of Fireworks Victims with Eye Injuries in 10 Years
During the recent New Year’s celebrations, at least 187 people suffered eye injuries from fireworks. The number of people with eye injuries caused by fireworks has not been this high in ten years. Half of the cases involved children.
One in three patients suffered permanent injuries. Fifteen eyes were blinded, six of which had to be surgically removed. In four out of ten cases, the victims did not set off the fireworks themselves.
The OOG in OOG Association has been advocating for a ban on consumer fireworks in the Netherlands for many years. We now have allies among the police, medical specialists, and the fire department. Hopefully, policymakers will take these concerns seriously and put an end to the use of consumer fireworks.
