Dear Maaike,

My right eye was removed almost five months ago. Now, in my left eye, I’m experiencing a loss of visual acuity and trouble focusing. I also get tired easily. Is that normal? And will it go away?

Best regards, E.

Dear E,

Adjusting takes time. It can sometimes take up to a year for the good eye to get used to the new situation. But we sometimes hear from others in the same situation that certain symptoms persist—especially when people are tired at the end of the day. Usually, these symptoms go away after a good night’s sleep.

The symptoms of eye strain caused by using only one eye can vary, but the most common ones are:

  • Eye pain: A dull or sharp pain in the healthy eye, especially after prolonged use.
  • Headaches: Often around the eyes and temples.
  • Blurred vision: Difficulty focusing.
  • Dry eyes: A feeling of dryness or irritation.
  • Concentration problems: Difficulty concentrating while reading or using digital devices.

I recommend having your eyes checked thoroughly on a regular basis. It can sometimes be helpful to use reading glasses or computer glasses, for example, to provide additional support. Visit an optician for advice. It’s also important to have your healthy eye examined by an ophthalmologist every year. A doctor can check your eye for conditions such as cataracts or retinal detachment.

Here are some tips on how to prevent fatigue caused by seeing with only one eye:

  • Take regular breaks: Take regular breaks while working or reading to give your eyes a rest. The 20-20-20 rule can help with this: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 meters away for 20 seconds.
  • Proper lighting: Ensure there is sufficient and even lighting to prevent unnecessary strain.
  • Eye Exercises: Do some simple eye exercises to relax and strengthen your eye muscles.
  • Hydration: Keep your eye moist with eye drops as needed.
  • Ergonomic workspace: Set up a comfortable workspace with a properly adjusted monitor to reduce strain.

The severity of your eye symptoms often varies from person to person. For some people, the symptoms go away on their own after a few months, while others continue to experience problems for the rest of their lives. The most important thing is to discuss your symptoms with your healthcare providers so they can advise you.

Stay strong. I hope your symptoms improve soon.

Best regards, Maaike
