The impetus for creating this book came from the European Society of Oculoplastic and Reconstructive Surgery (ESOPRS). Dion Paridaens served as secretary of this professional association for eight years and has been its president since 2023. “Every year, we welcome 800 eye specialists to our conference to receive continuing education and exchange information on new developments. But we also wanted to offer young medical specialists the opportunity to take a specialty exam with international recognition. That became the EBO ESPORS exam. Our book will serve as the study material for that exam. Last year, the first four doctors took the exam.”
Expand Your Knowledge
In addition to the three editors, about twenty other authors contributed to the book on oculoplastic and orbital surgery, including doctors from other continents. This makes the book an important resource for surgeons around the world. “We hope this will help expand knowledge of our field on every continent. There is a great deal of international collaboration. From Europe, we often consult with surgeons from South America, Asia, and the United States. It’s good to keep learning from one another.” Work is already underway on the second edition of the book. The plan is to link an online video library to it as well.
For patients?
The book has 90 chapters. About 10 chapters deal with orbital surgery, and 21 chapters cover the field of orbital medicine. So is this a book that would be of interest to patients? “It’s, of course, a scientific book intended for doctors. But if you’re a patient who’s somewhat familiar with the subject matter and has a good command of English, it might be interesting to read certain chapters.” Paridaens’ eyes light up as he says, “And I’d be happy to prepare a summary in Dutch of a few key chapters for your members. Then you can post them in the library section of the new OOG in OOG Association website.” The OOG in OOG Association is, of course, very pleased with this generous offer from Dr. Paridaens, who has served as a member of our association’s medical advisory board for many years.
