This is good news for everyone in the Netherlands who has vision problems. For many years, the OOG in OOG Association has been advocating for a decision like this. It’s fantastic that this day has finally come.

94 members of the House of Representatives want to put an end to the fireworks tradition. This proposal also has sufficient support in the Senate. It is not yet clear when the fireworks ban will take effect.

The NSC does, however, stipulate that there must be organized fireworks displays. The VVD demands that an effective enforcement plan be put in place and that illegal fireworks be dealt with firmly. The fireworks industry must also be compensated.

It is not yet certain whether the fireworks ban will take effect this year. PVV State Secretary Jansen of Public Transportation and the Environment is tasked with preparing the ban and says he will definitely need a year and a half. He is considering compensation of 100 to 150 million for the fireworks industry, but also sees challenges in finalizing that. It must not be viewed as state aid.

The House of Representatives will debate the fireworks ban on Thursday, at which time there may be more clarity on the next steps. The position of the opposition party Denk (three seats) will also become clear then.
