Poem About Contact Day
At the end of the National Contact Day, we were treated to a wonderful closing ceremony. Arnold Baldé wrote a poem especially for this day, inspired by conversations with participants.
Embrace Your Pain
Hans received his prosthetic eye 7 years ago
Wisdom tugged at his sleeve and said, “Eye to Eye.”
Elsa had to come to terms with her diagnosis and surgery
in a week and a half
Most people take longer than that
Others share: he got an arrow in his eye
is writing a book full of insight
She heard, “Look through your eyes!”
“Yes, if I could, I would.”
Her prosthetic eye means no more pain
Freedom in her hands From computer to massage table
We all need a massage
Mentally. Physically.
Even with both my eyes, I keep bumping into things
I still want to be seen
But I’d rather see myself
In front of the mirror. Yes and no. Acceptance.
Infinitely imperfect. And dancing with that.
At Oog in Oog, you can dance.
Hans found like-minded people.
People with experience.
I learned something today.
If you’re ever stuck.
Reach out. Call. Visit.
I don’t know much about prosthetic eyes.
But there’s one thing I do know
You feel better with like-minded people.
And even with a stranger
Hand in hand
If you’re looking for hugs
Arm in arm
I, too, am more likely to
Eye to eye
