At the Hague Artificial Eye Laboratory, the eye prosthesis is made in a single day. If you are having a full eye prosthesis or a shell prosthesis made, you are expected to arrive at the Laboratory around 10:00 a.m. The fitting takes place around 12:30 p.m., and the prosthesis is ready around 4:30 p.m. If you have a follow-up appointment, you’ll be finished around 1:30 p.m. Polishing the ocular prosthesis takes about 1.5 hours.

Frédérique holds office hours throughout the country. In addition to The Hague, you can see her in Zaandam, Utrecht, Leeuwarden, Hattem… About 4 weeks after the surgery, you’ll have an appointment to be fitted for the ocular prosthesis. This fitting isn’t painful; at most, it feels a little strange. As a rule, the ocular prosthesis is ready after two weeks. During the second visit, the shape and color are checked, and it is fitted.

Jelmer Remmers creates ocular prostheses for both children and adults and specializes in the treatment of microphthalmia/anophthalmia (MICA), retinoblastoma, and complex cases. In addition, Jelmer holds a part-time position as a researcher at Amsterdam UMC, focusing on the implementation of 3D technology in the field of ocular prosthetics.

Benjamin Flettner is a German manufacturer of glass ocular prostheses. He holds office hours in Maastricht, Arnhem, Rotterdam, and Zuidlaren. In addition to German, Benjamin speaks Dutch and English fluently.

Prior to 2023, Müller was the ocularist for glass eye prostheses. After the company withdrew from the Dutch market due to staffing issues, ocularist Benjamin—who previously worked for Müller—started his own business in the Netherlands. As of 2025, Benjamin has contracts with several Dutch health insurance providers. Be sure to check whether your health insurance provider has a contract with Benjamin; otherwise, you’ll have to pay for the consultation with Benjamin out of pocket and then submit a claim to your health insurance provider. In most cases, non-contracted health insurers reimburse 75% to sometimes 100% of the cost of a glass prosthesis. The amount of the reimbursement depends heavily on your policy. So always contact your own health insurer before your first appointment.

In all cases, a recent medical statement from your medical specialist (ophthalmologist) or primary care physician is required. A statement from your primary care physician is only acceptable if you have not been undergoing active treatment (for more than 1 year) from a medical specialist.
