{"id":6498,"date":"2023-05-31T15:08:00","date_gmt":"2023-05-31T13:08:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ver-ooginoog.nl\/bibliotheek\/nimweegs\/"},"modified":"2026-09-15T16:16:24","modified_gmt":"2026-09-15T14:16:24","slug":"nimweegs","status":"publish","type":"library_pt","link":"https:\/\/ver-ooginoog.nl\/en\/library\/kolommen\/nimweegs\/","title":{"rendered":"Nimweegs"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wp-block-post-date\"><time datetime=\"2023-05-31T15:08:00+02:00\">31 May 2023<\/time><\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I wasn&#8217;t allowed to use the word <strong><em>Nimweegs <\/em><\/strong>, and in turn, I\u2019ve (tried to) wean my children off it as well. <strong><em>But these days, just for fun, I chat with my little boy in Nimweegs! <\/em><\/strong>That\u2019s why I asked <strong><em>my little boy<\/em><\/strong> if he\u2019d come along to the festive launch of the Nijmegen dictionary!  <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Baos<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For many years, the Nimweegs Soap Theater put on fantastic <strong><em>end-of-year shows<\/em><\/strong><em>.<\/em>These performances featured wonderful sketches and songs about current events in our city. The scripts were almost all conceived and written by the man known as the <strong><em>baos<\/em><\/strong> of the theater\u2014Leo van Stijn. Unfortunately, the tradition has come to an end, but the <strong><em>baos<\/em><\/strong> continued to write: columns in local weekly newspapers and, together with two other authors, he wrote a new edition of the Nijmegen dictionary<em>: <strong>the *Nieuwe Nimweegs Woordenboek*! <\/strong><\/em>   <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From the<strong><em> Baos himself<\/em><\/strong> I received an invitation to attend the festive presentation of the new dictionary. The first copy was to be presented to our mayor. I felt honored to be there, and <strong><em>my little one<\/em><\/strong> was happy to come along.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was already pretty crowded when we walked into the small room at the local bookstore. To get a good view of everything, I always like to sit on the right side of the room, but those seats were already taken. <strong><em>My little boy <\/em><\/strong>pointed to two empty seats in the back left corner of the room and said:<strong><em> \u201cLook, Mom, next to that guy\u2014we can sit there so you can see well.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><em>.  Once <\/em> we were seated there, my son whispered to me, <em><strong>\u201cBe careful, Mom\u2014don\u2019t hit the guy sitting to your right, okay?\u201d<\/strong><\/em> I hissed back, laughing and pretending to be angry,<strong><em>\u201cI\u2019ve told you a million times\u2014I\u2019m only watching with one eye, but I\u2019m not blind, you know!<\/em>\u201d<\/strong>    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Presentation<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We enjoyed the remarks by the organizers, the authors, and our mayor. Afterward, we had a wonderful time listening, along with the other attendees, to the Nimwegen-themed texts and songs recited by former members of the Soap Theater. Then we raised a toast to the beautiful new book.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We bought the book and had the <em>baos sign <\/em>it. As he handed the book back to me and looked at <em>my little boy<\/em>, he said:    <strong><em>\u201cIt\u2019s good that you brought your kids along; the Nimweegs language must be passed on to the next generation to prevent it from dying out.\u201d<\/em><\/strong>  I saw a huge grin on the face of <strong><em>my little guy<\/em><\/strong><em>. I <\/em>braced myself, because I sensed another joke at my expense coming my way, and it came <strong>:<em>\u201cOh<\/em>, <em>it\u2019s the other way around\u2014I<\/em> <em>\u2019ve been<\/em> <em>speaking<\/em> <em>Nimweegs with our mom to make sure she doesn\u2019t forget it now that she\u2019s getting older<\/em><\/strong><em>.\u201d <\/em>The roaring laughter of the <strong><em>bao<\/em><\/strong><em>s<\/em> made me realize that <strong><em>my little guy<\/em><\/strong> quickly.   <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Anita Hol-Bubeck  <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Translation<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>But right now, I&#8217;m hanging out with my son in Nimwegen\u2014just for fun!  <\/em><\/strong><br \/>But these days, my son and I speak in the Nijmegen dialect just for fun.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>End-of-Year Performances:<br \/><\/em><\/strong>end-of-year performances<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Baos:<\/em><\/strong> boss<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>on their own:<\/em><\/strong> self  <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Check it out, Mom\u2014next to that pillar, we can sit there; you can see it really well<\/em>:<\/strong><br \/>Look, <strong><em>Mom, next to that pillar, we can sit there; you can see<\/em><\/strong> it <strong><em>really well<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Are you making sure you don&#8217;t hit the people right next to you<\/em>?:<\/strong><br \/><strong><em>Are you making sure you don&#8217;t hit the people right next<\/em><\/strong> to <strong><em>you<\/em><\/strong>?  <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>I&#8217;ve said it a bunch of times already\u2014I only see out of one eye, but I&#8217;m not blind, you know!:<\/em><\/strong> I&#8217;ve said it before\u2014I only see out of one eye, but I&#8217;m not blind!  <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>It&#8217;s great that you brought your son along; the Nijmegen dialect needs to be passed on to the next generation to prevent the language from dying out:<\/em><\/strong> It\u2019s good that you brought your son along; the Nijmegen dialect must be passed on to the next generation to prevent the language from dying out.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Baos<\/em> <em>It\u2019s the other way around\u2014I\u2019m speaking in the present tense<\/em> <em>I often speak the Nijmegen dialect with my mom to prevent her from forgetting it as she gets older:<\/em><\/strong> Baos, it\u2019s the other way around\u2014these days I often speak Nijmegen dialect with my mom to prevent her from forgetting it as she gets older<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I was born and raised in Nijmegen, still live there, and plan to continue living there.
