If a child has MICA in one eye, this results in facial asymmetry. The side with the MICA-affected eye often has a smaller eye socket, jaw, and cheekbone. This results in a face that is not well-balanced. In children with MICA in both eyes, the eye sockets are smaller and lie much deeper in the face, with narrow eyelid slits.      <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the child cannot see out of one or both eyes, treatment with eye socket-filling prostheses (conformers) is usually initiated. These are gradually replaced with larger ones until the child can wear a natural-looking artificial eye. With this treatment, the eye socket can still grow. As a result, there is less asymmetry in the face.   <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Study<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this study, we examined how the eye sockets actually developed in children with MICA, and whether eye size, treatment, or age influenced this development. We followed a group of 72 young patients from 2013 to 2022. A radiologist performed regular ultrasounds to measure the axial length of the eye (the distance from the cornea to the retina), as well as the height and width of the eye socket. We performed a total of 400 ultrasounds.      <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Results<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We examined 49 children with one eye affected by microphthalmia. In half of this group, the eye grew by more than 1 mm. Despite this growth, in 24 of the 49 patients it was still significantly less than the growth of their normal eye. However, the vast majority of these children did exhibit orbital symmetry of more than 80%. An axial length of less than 10.5 mm was more frequently associated with facial asymmetry.    <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We observed the best results in terms of symmetry in infants who began conformer therapy before their first birthday.
