Now I want her to ride her bike to school on her own (with me) after the Christmas break. Do you have any tips on how I can best go about this?

Best regards,
A.

Dear A.,

That’s great that you’re going to do that. Riding a bike is important for your daughter’s independence and self-confidence. Children who see with only one eye have a limited field of vision and lack depth perception. This can make it harder to judge distances and speeds. It can also be more difficult to spot obstacles or other road users in time. In addition, bright light or rain can further limit visibility.

Here are a few tips:

Make sure your daughter knows how to brake properly, take turns, and perform an emergency stop. Practice these skills somewhere quiet.

Choose quiet, well-lit routes. Avoid busy intersections and roads with poor visibility.

First, ride the route together and discuss any difficult sections.

Have your daughter wear sunglasses and/or a cap or sun visor when the light bothers her.

If your child wears glasses, a cap can help keep the rain off them.

If it’s cold or wet, choose a hat instead of a hood. A hood makes it harder to look around.

While biking, there are some helpful ways to assist your child:

Have your child get off the bike and cross on foot if they can’t see clearly.

Teach your daughter to keep a safe distance from other road users.

Have your child slow down in busy or confusing situations.

Consider using safety aids such as a bicycle helmet, high-visibility clothing, a mirror, or a flag attached to your bike.

Agree on a stop signal with each other and practice it every now and then while you’re out and about.

Ride diagonally behind your child, first with your “rear wheel next to her front wheel,” and later about one wheel length behind her. This way, your daughter can hear and see more than if you were riding next to her. Finally, as a parent, you can easily swerve or intervene, because you can keep an eye on both your child and the situation at the same time.

Once your daughter starts riding her bike more independently, you can give her more space and ride directly behind her so she can keep a good eye on the traffic behind her. That way, your daughter will have the best possible hearing and visibility.

Discuss difficult situations you might encounter along the way while you’re stopped in a safe place. Questions you can ask include: “From which direction can you expect traffic?” and “What right-of-way rules or signs are there?”

Help and Advice

Do you have questions or would you like guidance on helping your child learn to ride a bike?
