This can be due to a loss of self-confidence, for example. You may feel insecure about how you look and how others perceive you. You may also be afraid of the future. Living with reduced vision can be challenging, especially if you’re unsure how to continue doing everyday tasks. You’ll need to get used to moving differently and finding your way in new situations. Losing an eye can also be emotionally taxing. It takes time to come to terms with this. And living with one eye often takes more energy. Crowded places, dinners out, tricky routes, driving at night, or going for walks together can make you tire more quickly.

How do you deal with feelings of gloom?

Feelings of sadness and grief are often part of the recovery process. That’s normal. Below are some tips that can help you cope with feelings of sadness after losing one eye.

1. Be patient with yourself
Recovery takes time, both physically and emotionally. It’s normal to feel down sometimes. Give yourself space to experience these feelings. It’s also okay if you don’t always have energy or motivation.

2. Seek support from others
Talking to people who have been through the same thing can help. You can meet others in similar situations at the OOG in OOG Association, either online or at in-person meetings. It can be comforting to realize that others understand what you’re going through.

3. Focus on what you *can* do
Some things may have become more difficult, but there are also many things you can still do. Many people with one eye find new ways to adapt to their lives. Think about sports, creative activities, or other hobbies. Try to do things that you enjoy.

4. Use assistive devices and technology
There are various assistive devices available that make life with one eye easier. These include technical aids, mirrors, and magnifying glasses. They can help you remain independent and active. Koninklijke Visio can provide you with expert advice on this.

5. Learning to Deal with Other People’s Reactions
It can be difficult when people react differently or look at you differently. That can make you feel insecure. Often, people don’t really know what it’s like to be missing an eye. By being open about your situation, others can gain a better understanding. This also helps you feel more confident and relaxed.

New Balance

So, feeling down at times is a natural part of losing an eye and the recovery that follows. At the same time, it’s important to keep looking ahead and find things that can help you feel stronger. Talk to people you trust and ask for support when you need it. Give yourself time to recover, both mentally and physically.

If these feelings of sadness persist, it may help to contact your primary care physician and discuss together what kind of support is right for you.
