When I remove my eye prosthesis to clean it, I always check the white sclera to see if it looks normal. Would it be a good idea to have the white sclera checked by an ophthalmologist?  <\/p>\n<p>Best regards,<br \/>W.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Dear W.,<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I forwarded your question to Gijsbert H\u00f6tte, an ophthalmologist at the Rotterdam Eye Hospital and a member of our Medical Advisory Board. He had the following to say: <em>It is indeed important for her to monitor this herself and have it evaluated by an ophthalmologist if it causes any problems. <\/p>\n<p>Regular checkups by an ophthalmologist are not necessary as long as there are no symptoms. However, some patients do prefer to have their healthy eye checked regularly. In principle, this isn\u2019t necessary either, unless, of course, there are (or are risks of) ophthalmic problems in that eye.<\/em> <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>But even with a healthy eye, I can easily imagine that someone would appreciate having an ophthalmologist examine their good eye once every 1 to 2 years. The ophthalmologist can then also take a quick look at the eye socket behind the prosthesis. <\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>In short, it&#8217;s not necessary, but it&#8217;s understandable if she wants to have her healthy eye and the socket checked every once in a while.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I hope Dr. H\u00f6tte has answered your question with this?<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Best regards,<br \/>Maaike<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Office staff member Maaike Oosterhof is the driving force behind the peer support program at the OOG in OOG Association.
